VALENTINES 10k - 13th February

4 Members of GYDAC took part in the annual Valentine 10K.  Organised by Norfolk Gazelles the run started at Swanton Abbots and undulated through the countryside on a cold and windy morning.  John England enjoyed the run finishing in 51:12 in 110th place.  First GYDAC lady home was Sue Ryles continuing her marathon training.  Sue ran strongly to record 62:07 taking 200th position.  Maureen Engand finishing 211th was timed at 64:48 which was quicker than her previous run at this event.  Third lady home in 216th place was Elaine Haggarty recording a time of 67:34, good preparation for the Silverstone Half Marathon

GREAT BENTLEY HALF MARATHON - 6th February

3 members of Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club ran the Great Bentley Half Marathon. In blustery conditions they tackled this 13.1 mile relatively flat course along with 728 other runners mainly from Essex. All 3 are in training for the forthcoming Virgin London Marathon on 17th April and it seems that their training has been paying off. First home was Chris Gay, who hasn’t completed a half marathon in under 1:40 for over 2 years, so he was pleased with his time of 1:39:39. Next home was Sue Ryles who rarely competes in organised races but with London in mind was persuaded to enter – so she was exceptionally thrilled to finish in 2:20:48, well ahead of her expectation of a 2:30 finish. Pat Brightman has learned how to run again and is now ahead of her times before her skiing accident in 2004 – with a finish of 2:41:11.

WYMONDHAM 10K - 1st January 2011

The New Year’s Day 10K at Wymondham is a popular annual event for those not suffering from the after-effects of Christmas. As usual this race attracted a large field with 340 finishers. 3 members of Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club ran the race in pleasant conditions around the countryside of Wymondham. First home was John England in a time of 53:48, Maureen England finished in 1:05:53. Pat Brightman was especially pleased with her time of 1:16:03 her best 10K for many years – just proving that training does really pay off!!

EAST COAST 10K - 25th October

On Sunday 6 members of the Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club competed in the annual East Coast 10K. The weather was good, although slightly windy on the seafront but the atmosphere of the event was good with a total of 529 finishers. Andrew McNamara was the first club runner home in a time of 51:06, closely followed by David Drewitt who recorded 51:10. John England is now injury free and finished in 53:14. It was nice to see Richard Verschoyle join the team for an excellent effort in 59:32. It was then the turn of Maureen England to bring the ladies home in 1:05:23 with Elaine Haggarty finishing in 499 position with a time of 1:07:11

NORTH NORFOLK 7 - 18th October

This seasons road races may nearly be over, but on Sunday, 2 members of Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club, participated in the North Norfolk 7, organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners. This is an undulating course which attracted 244 finishers. Chris Gay who hasn’t missed many local races this year finished in a time of 54:41. Elaine Haggarty was pleased to have beaten her 2008 time and finished in 1:16:06.

DISS 7.5 MILE - 27th September

Once again, Chris Gay, was the sole representative at this race, many members were still recovering from the previous weekend, whilst Elaine and Cindy went for a training run.  This sister race to the 15 Miler attracted 79 runners, Chris was pleased with his performance - finished 16th in a time of 57:25 - 3rd in his M45 age category.

GREAT NORTH RUN - 20th September 2009

Our newest member of the Road Runners - Cindy Jane Durrant headed up north whilst the rest of us were around the roads of the County on the Round Norfolk Relay.

Cindy was really pleased with her first half marathon and finished in a time of 2:46:16.

 

Andrew McNamara also ran at the GNR  - he did it quite comfortably and somewhat regret that he didn't go faster - his time was 2:09:07.

LOWESTOFT SCORES RACE - 13th September

The 14th Scores Races at Lowestoft  – Britain’s Most Easterly Hill Race – 4.75K including 409 steps. 

The Junior Ladies race over a distance of 2K was won by CATHERINE LEE in a time of 10:47 - Catherine finished 3rd overall.

The Senior Race was contested by 128 runners, CHRIS GAY was our only competitor and finished 52nd in a time of 36:36:00 - a good preparation for the forthcoming Round Norfolk Relay.

WISSEY HALF MARATHON - 6th September

The Wissey Half Marathon held at Stoke Ferry is an annual race organised by Ryston Runners and always attracts a large entry. This Sunday was no exception with a total of 233 finishers – this race was part of the Runners Centre Grand Prix and the Norfolk County Championships. On this occasion, only one member of Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club was able to run – Chris Gay in preparation for his 20 mile leg of the Round Norfolk Relay was pleased with his time of 1:41:26.

WROXHAM 5K SERIES 2009

RACE 3 - 26th August

The last of the Wroxham 5K Road Race series took place. This race was a Norfolk County Championship race and also the 9th Race of the Runners Centre Grand Prix series with a total of 366 runners. The weather conditions were almost ideal as it was a cool evening. All the Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club runners were pleased with their times. The first club member home was Andrew McNamara, in training for the Great North Run in September – finished in 23:06. Next home was Sue Fraser in a time of 25:22, she also collected a BRONZE County medal for the Ladies 50-59 age category. Dawn Clegg was only just outside her PB when she finished in 29:39. A new member, running her first competitive road race was Cindy-Jane Durrant recorded a time of 30:56 and Elaine Haggarty completed the team with a finish of 32:21.

RACE 2 - 24th June

Andrew & Frankie

With a total of 271 runners finishing the course. Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club had 2 of their younger runners taking part. The 1st to finish was Frankie Turner, in a PB time of 21:36 – and for her efforts she was awarded with the prize of 2nd Junior Lady. Not far behind and now becoming a regular on the roads was Andrew McNamara – again running in a PB time of 22:29. The last race in this series will be on Wednesday 26th August, which will also incorporate the Runners Centre Grand Prix and County Championships.

 

RACE 1 - 27th May

On the night of the Champions League final, Norwich Road Runners were pleased to have 237 runners for the 1st of their 3 Race 5K series, based in Wroxham. Due to holiday commitments, only 2 runners from GYDAC was present – Andrew McNamara is now finding his road running feet and finished in a time of 22:54. Sue Fraser was very pleased with her time of 24:55. 

 

CHAMPIONS 10K - BERLIN - 22nd August

Whilst in Berlin, watching the World Athletics Championships and supporting the British athletes, 3 members of Great Yarmouth & District Athletics Club, took the opportunity to participate in the Champions 10K Road Race. With some 8000 runners on the streets of Berlin, the race started and finished at the Brandenburg Gate, whilst taking in all the sights along the way. On this hot sunny afternoon, there were plenty of marshals and water stations along the route and when the race was finished, everyone received a superb medal along with welcoming refreshments and energy bars. John England in training for his leg of the forthcoming Round Norfolk Relay finished in a time of 58:51. Maureen England suffering with a knee injury was pleased with her time of 1:08:24, whilst Pat Brightman found it a little too warm and came home in 1:20:11. 

REEPHAM SUMMER SUNDAY 10K - 16th August 2009

At the recent Reepham Summer 10K, 3 ladies from the Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club ran along with 351 other runners, with made this race one of the largest entries this year for a 10K race, which was also part of the Runners Centre Grand Prix series. On this very hot Sunday, everyone’s time were slower than normal, but the scenery and atmosphere still made it a very enjoyable day out. Results: Sue Fraser 54:15,k Dawn Clegg 1:06:51, Elaine Haggarty 1:09:37.

WIBBLY WOBBLY LOG JOG - 7th August

A very popular race in the calendar is the Wibbly Wobbly Log Jog organised by Brandon Fern Hoppers, a 4.8 mile undulating course through Thetford Forest on a Friday evening.  It was a lovely night, although a little humid for this sold-out race with 292 finishers.  8 members of Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club took part.  Results:  Chris Gay 37:49, John England 40:58, Sue Fraser 44:25, Diane Clark 53:33, Dawn Clegg 54:01, Maureen England 54:05, Elaine Haggarty 56:29, and Pat Brightman, with a PB of some 3½ minutes finished in 62:58 with a further 8 runners behind her !!

WORSTEAD FESTIVAL 5 MILE - 24th July

TEAM WORSTEAD

The Worstead Festival 5 Mile Road Race is always a highlight in the racing calendar and last Friday’s was no exception. A total of 372 runners finished, including a group of 11 members from Great Yarmouth & District Athlete Club. The race takes you through the villages of Worstead and Sloley and there is always plenty of support by the locals along the route, enjoying the evening sunset and a glass of wine. GYDAC Results: Chris Gay 37:21, Andrew McNamara 38:15, John England 39:38, Sue Fraser 42:15, Sue Ryles 49:13, Dawn Clegg 49:58, Diane Clark 50:28, Maureen England 52:11, Elaine Haggarty 53:33, Denise Goodwin 54:18, Pat Brightman 62:44.

LONDON BIKEATHON 2009

It's all over

As well as participating in road races, several members of Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club enjoy cycling events whilst raising money for charity. On Sunday, 3 members – Elaine Haggarty, Chris Gay and Pat Brightman, took part in the 2009 London Bikeathon – Challenge Route. Organised by and in aid of Leukaemia Research. A course of 52 miles, with a Chelsea Pensioner as a starting marshal, commenced at the Royal Chelsea Hospital, along the Thames Path to Richmond Park, before turning back through the streets of London, taking in all the historic sights like St. Pauls Cathedral, The Old Bailey and The O2 Arena prior to reaching the Thames Barrier. From there a return journey of 13 miles alongside the Thames, passing the London Eye and over the Chelsea Bridge, before finishing at the Hospital. Around 6,500 cyclists filled the city in various coloured t-shirts, depending on the mileage being cycled. As this was not a race, all 3 members cycled together and completed the course in around 6¼ hrs.

 

MUTFORD RELAYS 2009

Try new challenges was the motto of the Great Yarmouth & District Athletic Club road runners this season – so on Sunday, 14 members went along to the Mutford Relays for the first time, an excellent event organised by Waveney Valley A.C.   The relay consists of 5 runners each racing around a 5k undulating circuit. A total of 32 teams competed in this annual event and with a start time of 12 midday it became a very hot afternoon. Congratulations to Dave Drewitt, who due to a last minute casualty had to run 2 legs.

Results of GYDAC’s 3 teams: 

Team A: 2:04:06, Frankie Turner 22:32, Dave Drewitt 24:15, Sue Fraser 26:07, Adele Postle 26:39, John England 24:33. 

Team B: 2:34:09, Diane Clark 32:38, Sue Ryles 29:53, Denise Goodwin 34:33, Stef Herod 30:17, Penny Studley 26:58. 

Team C: 2:41:11, Pat Brightman 39:52, Dawn Clegg 31:03, Maureen England 31:36, Karly Clegg 32:53, Dave Drewitt 25:47.

MIKE GROVES 10TH ANNIVERSARY RUN 2009

On a beautiful summers evening, the village of Coltishall was filled with runners for the 10th anniversary of the MIKE GROVES RUN. A multi-terrain, undulating course of 5.89k a team of 10 runners from GYDAC took part in this popular race. The first member home was young Catherine Lee, only 13yrs, entering her first road race and put in an exceptional performance to finish 12th overall and 1st Lady in a time of 24:30 over a minute ahead of the next female competitor. Andrew McNamara, has now found his road legs and was pleased with his time of 26:58. Next to finish and now injury free John England in 28:44. The in-house competition amongst the other ladies was won by Diane Clark in 36:02, only 2 strides ahead of Sue Ryles in 36:04 and 3 paces behind was Dawn Clegg in 36:07. Maureen England finished in 36:40, having been chased by another younger novice Karen Goodwin who recorded a time of 37:03. Not far behind this group was Denise Goodwin in 39:32 and finally Pat Brightman struggled over the line in 45:24.
