Submitted by Pat on Mon, 07/20/2009 - 21:02Sophie McKinna travelled to the SIAB Home Countries International meeting in Antrim, Northern Irland on Saturday, a week after winning her bronze medal at the English Schools Championships in Sheffield.
The competition (including Sophie) had 3 of the UK's top U17 throwers, one of which had pipped Sophie to the silver medal in Sheffield.
Just before the first throw the rain poured down but Sophie was in a very relaxed mood and looking forward to the competition.
Sophie was second to throw in the group of eight and for the first time in competition, hit more than 1 throw over 12 metres (12.04, 12.17 & 12.17)
She won the competition and it was a proud moment for herself, family, club and town, when it was announced that Sophie McKinna from England was the winner of the girls shot competition - at just 14 she was by far the youngest girl in the event
Sophie's next big competition will be at the AAA's National U15/U17 championships on 8th/9th August at Bedford International Stadium
